The Last Light
at Wren House

The lamps were going out when the curator noticed the empty plinth. A small glass nightjar had vanished from Wren House’s collection. Four guests had each spent the evening in a different room. Their departure notes are all that remain.

Match each guest, carried item and departure time to a room. Every clue is true, and each name, item and time belongs in exactly one room. Then use the decisive evidence to identify the thief.

Witness notes

Eight pieces of evidence

  1. The guest in the Library left at 8:15.
  2. Ada left fifteen minutes after the guest in the Library.
  3. The guest carrying the brass key left at 8:30.
  4. The guest in the Library carried the scarf.
  5. Clara was the first guest to leave.
  6. Clara carried the pocket watch.
  7. Dev was in the Gallery.
  8. The guest in the Conservatory left before the guest in the Library.

The four departure times are 8:00, 8:15, 8:30 and 8:45. The carried items are a brass key, scarf, pocket watch and gloves. The stolen nightjar is a separate object.

Choose a guest, item and time for each room. Moving an already placed piece swaps it with the piece in the destination slot. You can change your theory as often as you like.

A little help, when you need it

Follow the trail

Give me a first step

Clue 1 gives you the Library’s departure time: 8:15. Place it. Clue 4 gives you another piece for the same room: the scarf. You do not need to know the guest before using those facts.

I have the first placements. What connects next?

Look at the two clues that refer to the Library’s time. Ada leaves fifteen minutes after 8:15, so she leaves at 8:30. The Conservatory guest leaves before 8:15; the only earlier time available is 8:00. Keep those relationships together as you match names and items.

Reveal the complete solution and every deduction

This walkthrough contains all the answers to this practice case. It does not reveal any daily case.

  1. Start in the Library. Clue 1 puts 8:15 there. Clue 4 puts the scarf in the same room.
  2. Fix Ada’s time and item. Clue 2 places Ada fifteen minutes after 8:15, at 8:30. Clue 3 gives 8:30 to the brass key carrier. There is only one guest at each time, so Ada carried the brass key.
  3. Identify the earliest departure. The Conservatory guest left before the Library guest (clue 8). Of the four available times, only 8:00 is before 8:15. Clara left first (clue 5), so Clara was in the Conservatory at 8:00. Her item was the pocket watch (clue 6).
  4. Find Ada’s room. Ada cannot be in the Library, whose guest left at 8:15, or the Conservatory, whose guest left at 8:00. She cannot be in the Gallery because Dev was there (clue 7). That leaves the Study: Ada, brass key, 8:30.
  5. Fill the last spaces. Clara is in the Conservatory, Ada in the Study and Dev in the Gallery. Bram is the only guest left for the Library. The times 8:00, 8:15 and 8:30 are used, leaving 8:45 for the Gallery. The scarf, key and watch are used, leaving the gloves for Dev.
  6. Make the accusation. The decisive evidence identifies the brass key carrier. We established that this was Ada, so Ada took the glass nightjar. The board and the accusation now agree with every clue.

Why guessing is unnecessary: each step follows from a stated clue or from using each piece once. If a theory conflicts with a clue, follow the chain back to its first unsupported placement. Elimination becomes useful after you establish the facts it depends on.

Take the habit into the daily case

Look for direct facts first, then connect shared names, items and times. A clue can identify two pieces as belonging together before you know their room. The daily game’s tray lets you keep those groups together while you reason.

Today’s case uses the same deduction rules, with the 3D board, a timer, three placement checks and one final answer. This practice board always remains available for a relaxed refresher.
